Pull Up resistor needed?

One of the axes on my new TouchPro Quadrature board will be using an Open Collector rotary encoder (Omron E6A2-CW3C). 

I plan to add a 2K pull-up resistor to the A and B inputs to generate the input voltages.

Is this safe to do (or even necessary)?

Well to answer my own question, I fitted 2.2K pull up resistors and they did the job for me
