Just bought Yuriy's iGaging board, is there a commercial tach I can get to work with this board or is this a roll your own area at the present time ?

The boar works with anything that outputs a pulse, basically. I need to catch up on a few things, but if you can wait a few weeks, I ordered a bunch of different things to test (for a tachometer) and will post my findings to the blog.
On my lathe I use this sensor: http://amzn.to/2n10OFW.
It works OK with 5V supply (connected to the Quadrature board). I haven't tested it with 3.3V supply (iGaging board is not 5V-tolerant,  unlike Quadrature board) but I will know in a few days

Oh I can wait, just getting your board in so I have a little work ahead of me    So the idea with this setup Yuriy is you place a magnet on the spindle or pulley and it measures how often it senses the magnet ?

I don't know if it will work with the board; haven't had a chance to look at one.
You have access to those calculations on the axis details screen. I am adding a way to switch tachometer output to show SFM as well, but there are a few complications.

That is an infrared emitter and phototransistor, like this, but with a modular emitter/phototransistor:




I made one of these work on my lathe with a few strips of reflective tape on the spindle.  Supply 3.3V and ground, get a pulse back and feed it into the "A" input on the mixed scale board.  Only trouble with these is that the comparator circuit really needs more hysteresis added to make it more of a "digital" output, and the circuit topology doesn't lend itself to that.  I'm going to try to find some time this weekend to do something about that.
